Dear Sketchup -- you may have intended to design the digital pencil and paper, but we've managed to get more use out of Sketchup than any No. 2 pencil I've ever owned!
As a full service design firm, we work on projects ranging from print and web design, to residential and commercial architecture, to film and motion graphics. So far, we've yet to find a project where Sketchup isn't an essential piece of the planning or design.
But when Volkswagen approached us recently with a limited budget, we decided to really put Sketchup to the test: A full motion graphics trade show commercial starring several animations and models straight out of Sketchup 5.0. The images below are still-frames out of a 3 sequence, 2 ½ minute-long commercial featuring VW's automobile technologies of the near future. This particular sequence focused on their Hydrogen Fuel Cell technologies.
We used Sketchup to achieve a clear, simple and easy to understand aesthetic, while still allowing us to convey information about complex subjects such as the Hydrogen Fuel Cell, the chemical reactions within, and even a detailed depiction of the company's Touran -- the fuel cell equipped van.
